Mitigating the risk of flooding, we were appointed by High Peak Borough Council to construct two new retaining walls in the Serpentine Brook followed by reinstatement of the local area.

During Early Contractor Involvement (ECI), our Contracts Manager engaged with High Peak Borough Council to discuss construction techniques, methods and materials that would provide best value. Through our experience and knowledge working in watercourses, we recommended use of a specialist concrete containing an anti-washout mixture. This concrete solution fully mitigated the risk of contaminating the watercourse ensuring the most environmentally sustainable solution was provided.

Access to site was extremely restricted and extensive planning and coordinating was required to maintain safe access / egress and allow material deliveries to site. A 24hour two-way traffic control was established, manned by our NRSWA qualified traffic control officer. With a Director on Call 24/7, we provide an emergency response should this have been required at any point throughout the contract.

Engaging with an ecologist prior to works commencing, we reinstated the area increasing local biodiversity. Planting flora and fauna native to the local area allowed habitats to thrive whilst providing a usable open space for the general public in what was inaccessible wasteland.

Re-using material on site reduced lorry movements and amount of material sent to tip, thus ensuring an environmentally friendly solution was provided from the outset.

Allocating personnel with experience working in and around watercourses allowed safe systems of work to be developed and implemented and we were praised on our Health & Safety performance on site.
