East Midlands Airport - Central Apron Blast Screen Repairs

East Midlands Airport connect over 4.2 million passengers to more than 90 destinations world wide

Inspections of the blast screen identified extensive internal corrosion within existing vertical support uprights caused by long term water ingress. The supports were deemed beyond economical repair, requiring full replacement to maintain safe operations.

Working together

Working with the airport’s operational airside areas presented additional challenges, including:
– Maintaining strict compliance with airport safety and security requirements.
– Working adjacent to active taxiways/aircraft operations.
– Delivering works within a restricted programme.
– Ensuring the structural stability of the blast screen throughout the replacement works.
– Coordinating construction activities without impacting airport operations.

STRUCTURAL RENEWAL
We completed the design, manufacture and installation of nine replacement vertical braced support structures for the blast screen. Works comprised:
– Removal/disposal of existing corroded vertical braces.
– Production of engineering designs, calculations and fabrication drawings.
– Fabrication of replacement structural steelwork and connection details to relevant standards.
– Hot dip galvanising of all new steelwork to BS EN 1461.
– Powder-coated finish applied to match the existing white blast screen structure.

BLAST SCREEN REFURBISHMENT
Alongside structural replacement works, we undertook a complete refurbishment across the blast screen structure:
– Removal and treatment of corrosion and rust blistering
– Surface preparation and dressing of all affected areas
– Application of specialist rust treatment systems.
– Priming of exposed galvanised surfaces.
– Full repainting of the structure to restore appearance and durability.
– Provision of specialist access equipment for safe working at height.
